Teal Motor Lodge Gisborne Motel Accommodation

Welcome to Gisborne, East Cape

Gisborne is the first city in the world to greet the sun each morning, and it has a reputation for great food, wine and surf beaches. As the unofficial ‘Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand’, Gisborne has a comprehensive wine trail leading to boutique wineries. Several operators offer custom tours tailored for individuals or groups, to spare you the problem of driving.

Kaiti Beach is the site of Captain Cook’s first landing in New Zealand (9 October 1769); nearby is picturesque Te Poho O Rawiri Marae. If you’re interested in Maori culture, Gisborne is an essential port of call on your itinerary – old traditions are still evident in many parts of the city. Oral history records Titirangi (Kaiti) Hill as the point of arrival for the migratory waka (canoe), Horouta, which brought the first Maori to the area.

East Cape Lighthouse

The East Cape Lighthouse stands 154m above sea level on Otiki Hill, above East Cape, in the Eastland region of New Zealand. The East Cape Lighthouse is accessed by a walking track of some 700 steps. The walk is definitely worth it for the views at the top!

Rere Rock Slide

It's one thing to slide down a grassy hill on a piece of cardboard (remember that as a kid?), whooping with excitement as your corrugated ride gathers bouncing momentum. But it's another to slide at high speed down 60 metres of rock.

Most age groups could give this rock slide a go, however, a little care is suggested. So is using a boogie board, inflatable mattress or inner tube to replace the traditional cardboard vehicle.

Just one word of warning - don't mistake the Rere Falls for the rock slide! It may look like a gush of water that begs conquering, but these falls are better captured via photography. You'll also find a great swimming hole and picnic area here.

And if Rere Waterfall remains too compelling to ignore, you could always try walking around its cascading curtain to slide from the rocks behind into the water below.

Gisborne Wine Centre

Taste and experience all that the Gisborne wine region has to offer at the Gisborne Wine Centre. Located in the city's beautiful inner harbour, it's just a short walk from the CBD and many of the region's best hotels, motels and restaurants.

An extensive range of Gisborne wines are available for tasting each week, highlighting the diversity of the brands and varietals produced in the region. Gisborne wines, along with locally brewed beer and local ciders, are also served by the glass or bottle to be enjoyed overlooking magnificent harbour views. The Gisborne Wine Centre Cafe offers a selection of locally produced platters.

Tairawhiti Museum

This is a hidden gem, centrally located in the heart of Gisborne. Staff are helpful and gracious. There are numerous exhibits of local and historical interest. The complex also hosts exhibits of local artists and atrisans with some work on sale and other works on display.
